The USA has the twelfth highest GDP per capita of all countries included in the Happy Planet Index rankings. Despite its financial wealth, the USA ranks a dismal 122nd out of 152 – suggesting that its material wealth isn’t being translated efficiently into sustainable wellbeing for its people.
Human rights abuses are a problem in most of the world, including in some of the high-ranking countries in the Happy Planet Index results. While the Happy Planet Index may reflect some of the negative impacts of these abuses, it does not seek to directly measure this.
